Reading: The Great Gatsby

I'll confess that the only reason I bought this book was because I saw a pin on Pinterest that said something along the lines of their favourite book was The Great Gatsby because of all the fantastic quotes in it.

Well, that's a good enough reason for me!

To be honest, when the book arrived in the mail I was not expecting it to be only 115 pages long.

That kind of made me happy because I thought, if it's a crap book, then I'll finish it quicker!

Turns out, I quite liked the book. Of course, it took me a good 20 pages to become accustomed to the period writing, but after that, it was pretty smooth sailing.

Most of the characters were shallow and not very likeable (except Nick, I liked Nick), but I enjoyed the plot. I enjoyed reading about the Jazz Age of the 1920's. The excessive money, the parties, the attitudes, the love story.

And this was my favourite quote from the book:

Now, I have a special book to read next. I can't wait to see what it's like. :)

Layout: Dance

My second January layout for D-lish Scraps looks a little bit like this:

We were quite undecided about moving Kate from her school midway through the year. It was only because she was in the dance group that we kept her there and moved her the following year.

Well, I'm off to pack for a crop tomorrow night. I cannot believe how popular the crop was this month, so much so that we had to cut off numbers. And to think before the December one, I was worried there wouldn't be enough interest!

Have an awesome Thursday! :)

Layout: Happy Birthday

My first January DT share for D-lish Scraps.

I was a bit nostalgic coming up to Luke's 10th birthday, so I decided to scrap a photo from his 5th birthday.
And here he is on the morning of his 10th birthday. I think he enjoyed his day. He sure loves playing with his presents and dinner out was really nice. He even got to sleep over at his friends. Yep, I think a good day was had. :)

Project 365: 15 - 22 January

Another eight photos.

It's almost been a full month and I haven't missed a day... yet.

15. We decided to give Pixie a bath. With gardening gloves on, of course. She didn't find a huge amount of enjoyment in the process.
16. I've decided to start up again on Postcrossing. I'm only posting one card per week though, so it doesn't get too overwhelming. All three of these cards (I had a couple of weeks to catch up on) are headed to Germany.
17. I had a $10 voucher for Kikki K as it is my birthday month, so I finally decided to get the A Sentence A Day diary. Love it.
18. We took all three animals to the vet. I had to sit outside with Sally as she was quite vocal (read: embarrassing).
19. I love my morning cup of tea.
20. I actually went for a run... and I didn't fall over as I feared I would! Apparently it's only bikes I fall off and I'm ok with the running thing.
21. A night out with Sarah and Daphne. We went to the movies and saw The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Amazing movie. It made my feet itch and I can't wait to start traveling this world.
22. Luke had been asking for a couple of weeks now if we could make an apple pie. I finally remembered the ingredients when I went shopping, so we made it.

Craft: Deer Cross Stitch Pattern

Way back here I posted about completing a deer cross stitch with a pattern I made myself.

I have had a few Pinterest hits onto this post and last week I had someone ask if I had a pattern. How rude of me not to share before now!

When I was creating off the pattern, I changed it here and there, because let's face it, no one wants a cross stitch with a hangy bit between the legs. Anyway, since I didn't know how to remove it in Photoshop (I'm not very proficient in it), I just left that part off when it came to stitching.

You'll also noticed I gave my deer a bigger hunchback. No reason, except I thought it needed a bigger booty.

Ok, so for the pattern, just right-click to save, then open it in word, or any other program that you can print from and you're good to go. The pattern is larger than what's shown here, but you could resize it anyway, if needed.

If you create one, I'd love to see it, so can you drop a comment with the link?

Have fun. :)

Reading: Every Last One

I hadn't really read a review for this book when I decided to buy it. I read the little blurb on The Book Depository and thought, yeah, that sounds like a book I would like.

I don't think I was quite prepared for what the book had in store for me.

The first half of the book seemed to just drag along, I felt it was disjointed and it jumped back and forth and seemed a little too all over the place for my liking. (Maybe it's my simple brain, I don't know?)

Then right in the middle, the unimaginable happens and well, it made me tear up. And I was on the train. I had to put the book away.

Then the next morning I picked it up again and kept reading. I loved the second half of the book, not the subject matter, but the rawness of it. What was annoying in the beginning was mesmerising in the second half. It also made me think. And it made me sad. Soul sad.

I didn't find any quote in the book that I loved and made me feel empowered or that lifted my spirits.

But the last line of the book really made me ponder my life and what I would do in the same circumstance.

It's all I know how to do now. This is my life. I am trying.

Project 365: 7 - 14 January

Our life over 8 days. In snippets. From my phone.

Does it get any better than this? Probably not, for me anyway.

7. I was grateful for the cool change in the weather.
8. Grateful that I have been able to work from home for a week.
9. Both Kate and myself make the trek to the dentist.
10. Taking the kids to see The Hobbit.
11. Steve and I putting up the pergola. Digging those holes were the best workout!
12. Sweet morning kitty play (read: attacking).
13. Back on the train for some reading time.
14. Taking Kate and her friend to see The Book Thief.

Life has a funny way of getting away from you. Can you believe we are halfway through January already?

Layout: My Bear

8 posts in 8 days. It is almost a record around here.

I saw this sketch from Inspired Blueprints and I thought nah, it's not really me.

But the more I looked at it, the more ideas came to mind.

So I sat up late last night and completed this layout:

I'm loving going back and scrapping these photos from a couple of years ago. They bring back so many memories.

Project 365: 1 - 6 January

We have had an awesome start to 2014. We've been busy, but we have been having fun too.

Getting Pixie, going bowling, to the movies, painting the outside of the house.

I had an idea in my head about doing this on New Year's Eve, but the kids were way too tired by the time we got home after midnight, so we did it the next day.

I increased the shadows to make the photo darker. It was such a long exposure, it let in heaps of light, so this makes 2014 pop a bit better.

Now, I'm doing ok with this Project 365. So far anyway.

I saw this link going around Facebook the other day and I watched it and thought it was a pretty cool way to look at Project 365.

That combined with my Gratitude album and I should end up with some layouts in it this year I reckon.

So, we have a new addition to the Jarrett family.

She's such a little sweetie. She's scared of everything. She ate the kitty litter when we put her in it.

I think she will fit in just fine.

Layout: Kayak

This mood board over at Jot Magazine is awesome:

Who can go past a red/blue/yellow colour combo?

Apparently not me judging by the last layout I did as well!

2 layouts done this year. I think I need a rest now.

Layout: I Love Us

Back here in 2011, I wrote this post on starting a Grateful scrapbook album. It was where I would scrap a page per week for a year about all the little things I was grateful for.

Needless to say I have completed a total of 3 layouts for that album. It's not that I was ungrateful, it's just that I had good intentions with no follow through (like usual!)

I have been thinking about it for some time now and I'm not going to make myself do a layout per week and stick to the 'rules', but I am going to pop a layout in there whenever I can. Because it will be nice to look back on.

So, I was int he mood to scrap the other night and I was looking in my photo box and I came across this photo of Steve and I. One of the kids took it of us when we were at Christmas Carols a couple of years ago now. We don't have many photos of us together (or separately as we don't like having our photos taken!)

I thought that it would make a great addition to my Grateful album.

So there it is, my first layout for 2014. I think I did 33 last year. I wonder how many I'll get done this year?

One Little Word 2014: GO

The little voice in my head this year is going to keep shouting at me: GO!

I tend to over-think things, put things off, procrastinate, etc etc (read: lazy).

This year I am going to just get up, and go do stuff!

I'm going to try and limit my use of 'in a minute' and 'wait a sec'.

This will become my mantra:

And where that poster says sometimes, it usually ends up being always. I'm going to kick these bad habits!

I have a funny feeling I'm going to be very productive this year.

Now, I just need a way to get off the computer...

Project Life 2014

I am also tackling Project Life again this year, even though I haven't quite finished for 2013. Even so, I love my album from last year. Even my sister liked the concept (trust me, that's saying something!)

I learned a few things that I will incorporate this year:
  1. Record keeping is key! I didn't keep enough details and so I struggled sometimes to write more than the who/what/where/when's. This year I am keeping a little diary and I will jot info down, if I use it good, if I don't, it will still be fun to look back on in years to come.
  2. Snap the little stuff. I didn't take photos of our everyday stuff, and well, that's important too.
  3. Weekly date cards. I found this to be a waste of space and this year because I have decided to record in months with a little weekly wrap up, I should have more room for photos and fun stuff!
  4. Time. It's so easy to fall behind because well, life does not stop for anything, so, I'm aiming to set aside a day and time each week to complete my previous weeks spread (probably Tuesday night after the kids are in bed, there's no good shows on Tuesday, are there?)
  5. Journaling. This year I am going to journal more straight on to the photo. If there's sufficient space of course, no one will lose a head for the sake of journaling.
I completed my title page after I took our family photo:

Let's hope I can keep up this year. :)

Project 365

Yep. I'm going to have a good crack at it this year. I'm determined and I have good intentions. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm going to primarily take the photos with my phone so I won't have to drag around camera equipment around with me. And I'll totally use filters to make the photos look decent!

So, to keep my interest levels up, I made this little button yesterday.

It took me ohh, about 2 hours. I'm certainly no Photoshop whizz. And yep, that's my little vintage Box Brownie I picked up years ago off eBay for about $10. Try getting one for that price now.

Here's a little button if you want to add it to your blog and play along as well. You just need to right-click then save it.

I can't wait to see what 2014 brings me and my little family, but expect to see lots of dodgy camera photos! Yay!
